We were honored to be asked to be part of a panel discussion about oral histories. This was because of the years of work that has gone into our own Fraga family story – starting with the oral history stories that were passed down for years and then very fortuitously recorded on audio tape by Uncles Martin Fraga and Dan Fraga and cousin Ed Fraga – recordings here.
We shared how our family project started in the 1970’s with the recordings which were pivotal and critical in the making of the documentary Michoacán to Michigan – first as a family project which evolved into a revised version for the general public. This then led to a narrative by Daniel E Fraga which was published as a book with Spanish translation.
We hope that by our sharing our experience and what we have learned about the process of learning our history and methods of preserving and sharing it might provide helpful information and even inspiration to others working on their own family’s story.
